Valentines For Nuts

Who would have thought that when it comes to Valentine’s Day, nothing says it better than nuts! Given the right message tucked inside, these decorated walnuts can serve as funky valentines for grade-schoolers. Or, use them as a great centerpiece/conversation-starter for a Valentine party. Or, have a Valentine’s Day Hunt and see who can find the most hidden "Love Nuts." (For other holidays, just change the message inside.)

Materials:
Walnuts in whole shells
Acrylic paints in gold and silver
Glitter pens in red, gold, and iridescent
Metallic gel pen
Sequin trim
String of pearls
1/16" wide satin ribbon
Scissors
Tacky glue
White glue
"Nuts about you!"
"Nuttin’ but love!"
"You crack me up!"
"Come break my shell!!"
"You drive me nuts!"

1. Buy a bag of fresh walnuts in their shells. Carefully open up nuts without cracking shell to provide two perfect halves.
2.Scoop out meat and clean out inside of shell. Set aside meat for nibbling or cooking. (Click here for a delicious walnut recipe for Valentine’s Day.)

3.Paint the outside of some shells with gold or silver acrylic paints. If desired, leave some unpainted to decorate.

4.Use a glitter pen to paint on small hearts on some shells. Or, paint larger concentric hearts with different colors of glitter pens. For a different effect, use a finger to smooth a light coat of glitter over the outside of some shells.

5.For added interest, cut small amounts of sequin or pearl trims. Form into a heart and use tacky glue to secure on the outside of shell.

6.Wrap a 1/16" wide length of ribbon around a walnut and tie into a bow. Secure in place with a drop of glue.

7.Using a metallic marker, write your favorite message (see ideas beneath photo) on 3/4"-wide ribbon. Trim ribbon lengths to fit into walnut and roll into a ball.

8.Place balled ribbon inside a walnut half, then use rubber cement glue to secure the two halves together again. Recipient should be able to easily pull open nut to get message.

9.If you use as decoration, arrange a few decorated nuts in a bowl with natural shells or leave one at each place setting.
